Becoming a doula
Ever since my pregnancy and Declan’s birth, I have been slightly obsessed with all things birth. I loved being pregnant and I look forward to being in that state again, but what I am really excited for is the birthing experience. A little too excited actually, which got me thinking that maybe becoming a doula would be the right thing for me. It is something that I can do the rest of my life, it allows for a flexible work schedule so I can be home with my kid(s) more, and it is something I am truly passionate about. I spoke with my doula, Courtney, and she was kind enough to answer all of my “why, how, what” questions about her own journey to becoming a doula.
I have since downloaded the required reading list for DONA, the certification program and am slowly but surely checking them off. I read Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth while I was pregnant so I am already ahead of the game! By the way, if you are pregnant and haven’t read that book yet, do it. It is an amazing confidence booster as a woman, no matter what kind of birth experience you want to have. I have now finished one more and am half way through the third. What I can tell you so far, is that you should get a doula. For a million and one reasons, get a doula!

What an amazing journey! Have you seen the Business of Being Born? It’s on Netflix still and, if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it!
I have seen that movie! We didn’t watch it until either right before the birth or right after, but it was good! I am excited to see the new documentary coming out about Ina May too, should be interesting.
Heather…I am so with you on this. I had a home birth in May of last year (feels weird to say last year…it still seems so fresh) and I also have been slightly obsessed with birth ever since. My doula (who is also a dear friend) was my saving grace and I have also been feeling a calling towards becoming one someday. My labor was long..and yes…very painful…but felt so very incredible and right. People look at me like I’m crazy when I say I can’t wait to do it again someday
Is “the birth partner” on the reading list? I just started that one. Good luck, Heather! Keep us updated…
Hi Sara! It’s kind if addicting, birth, isn’t it?! Haha well, I guess not for all women
. The birth partner is on the list! It was a great book that husbands should definitely read if the soon-to-be mom is thinking of getting a doula. Let me know how things go for you!!!
